John is a member of the Board of Directors of Craton Equity Partners. The founder of Kuhns Brothers, a boutique investment firm, he has spent his business career in electric power production and investment banking. Catalyst Energy Corporation, a company founded by John and Bob in 1982, was one of the first successful independent power companies. He also founded New World Power Corporation in 1989, one of the first successful distributed power companies in the U.S.

The Solar Electric Light Company, a company co-founded by John in 1996, is the first company to successfully sell solar home systems to customers off the grid in the third world.  Originally employed at Salomon Brothers in 1976 in the publicly owned electric utility department, John worked on a variety of electric utility and related project financings.

John received an Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and in Fine Arts from Georgetown University, a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Chicago, and an Master of Business Administration degree from the Harvard Business School.
